Why Facebook's Trending Topics Spam Problem Can't Be Solved With Algorithms

The decision to nix Trending's human editors has proven controversial in mere days-but Facebook has long put too much faith in automation.

The decision to nix Trending's human editors has proven controversial in mere days-but Facebook has long put too much faith in automation.

When Facebook unceremoniously fired the team of human editors responsible for curating its Trending section, surely it didn't expect to be betrayed by its algorithm so quickly. Facebook laid off all the Trending curators on Friday, under the guise of wanting to reduce bias and "make the product more automated." The Trending team is being repopulated with engineers, who will oversee the algorithms charged with sussing out Trending content.

Facebook isn't a great place to get your news. Yet millions of Americans use the social network to learn about what's going on in the world every day.

This is core to a new controversy over Facebook's Trending feature, which exists to connect users to relevant stories. The company fired several trained journalists from the Trending team last Friday, leaving artificial intelligence and technical staff to identify and deliver stories to the site's users.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg later commented on his company's place in the news business.

LONDON - A blog instructing people how to approach women wearing headphones is getting a lot of attention on Twitter - for all the wrong reasons.

The article - published on men's grooming site The Modern Man - listed tips for approaching women on the street who were wearing headphones.

The tips include pointing at the woman and saying "I want to talk to you for a minute", as well as "confidently" asking her to take off her headphones.

Anthony Weiner has a sexting problem that most people just don't understand.

Since 2011, the struggle has played out publicly for the former Democratic congressman and his wife Huma Abedin, a close confidant and aide to Hillary Clinton.

Revelations that Weiner traded sexual messages and photos with women online led to his resignation from Congress in 2011, significantly undermined his New York City mayoral campaign in 2013 and, as of Monday, played a role in breaking up his marriage.

While Abedin had remained with Weiner in the years since the first scandal, she announced their separation Monday after a New York Post story detailed Weiner's long relationship, conducted electronically, with an unidentified woman. The pair exchanged sexually provocative messages and revealing photos. One of the images included what appeared to be Weiner and Abedin's son sleeping next to his underwear-clad father.  Read more...
