Twitter Group DM: A live test with William Shatner

My Twitter app lit up with a direct message alert and I stopped what I was doing to check it. I consider DMs important. They’re private messages between people who follow each other, something akin to a 20th century phone call

This DM was, however, different. It was from actor and Twitter gadfly William Shatner. He was initiating a Twitter Group DM.

Twitter introduced group DMs and native video on January 27, but it took almost a week for the features to arrive on my Twitter iPhone app. The ability to chat with multiple people at once — like a virtual meeting room — is part of Twitter’s ongoing effort to enhance direct messages and Twitter in general.
